DCI probing discovery of bodies in quarry at Mukuru Kwa Njenga

By |

The DCI has urged the public to cooperate with authorities as they conduct the investigation.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched an investigation into the discovery of bodies in a quarry at Mukuru Kwa Njenga.

In a statement on Friday, DCI boss Mohamed Amin stated that police from the Embakasi Division responded urgently to a distress call over the abandoned bodies at the quarry, also used as a dump site.

According to the DCI office in Embakasi, the six female bodies were in various states of decomposition. These bodies were wrapped in sacks and tightly secured with nylon ropes.

"The bodies have been transported to the City Mortuary, where they await comprehensive post-mortem examinations to determine the exact cause and circumstances of their deaths," DCI stated.

The DCI has urged the public to cooperate with authorities as they conduct the investigation.

At the crime scene, homicide detectives and forensic specialists collected and analysed samples to establish the identities of the deceased individuals.

Human rights activists, including the Mukuru Community Justice Center, who made the discovery revealed that some of the bodies had been dismembered.

"Today, bodies were discovered at a quarry pit opposite Kware police station, with ongoing retrieval efforts led by local youths. Police presence has been reported as more bodies are being recovered, some found chopped into pieces and placed in sacks. The initial count stands at six bodies," a community-based rights body posted on X.

A crowd gathered at the scene as some helped in the retrieval of the bodies.

Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) indicate that nine bodies have been retrieved from the quarry. "Six bodies were found in the morning, and an additional three were discovered in the afternoon."

Amidst these developments, numerous reports of missing persons have emerged, prompting families to share appeals on social media.

On Friday, students from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) staged protests along the Thika Superhighway following the mysterious death of Denzel Omondi, a third-year student who reportedly died after participating in protests against the Finance Bill. Omondi's body was discovered in a swamp in Juja, days after he was reported missing.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) is investigating Omondi's death.

"IPOA has requested relevant police documents and appeals for eyewitness accounts, including anyone who can provide verifiable CCTV footage or photographs," stated Ann Makori, Chairperson of IPOA.
