Three police officers are recovering in hospital after they were attacked with what is suspected to be acid by a woman in Nairobi's Ngara on Monday.

The officers identified as Tom Mbuku, Moses Lelei, and Joyce Otieno, were pursuing a suspect believed to have been carrying stolen medical drugs when the assault occurred.

According to a police report, the officers were investigating the theft of drugs allegedly being transported from Nairobi's central business district (CBD) to the medical facility in Ngara.

The suspect, who had reportedly entered a facility in the area, locked herself inside to avoid arrest.

Despite repeated attempts to force entry, the officers were unable to breach the door as they tried to apprehend the suspect.

Moments later, a 45-year-old woman, identified as Mororoi, emerged from the facility and threw a chemical substance suspected to be acid on the officers.

The attack left the three officers with serious burn injuries to their faces and limbs. A backup team was quickly dispatched to the scene, and the injured officers were rushed to Nairobi West Hospital for treatment.

As the investigation unfolded, four individuals inside the facility — Mwaura Karumba, 60, Beatrice Kamba, 36, Faith Mboga, 22, and Rose Gitau, 46 — were arrested in connection with the incident.

The police also recovered five litres of suspected sulphuric acid and assorted drugs from the facility, which have been taken as exhibits.

"Five litres of suspected sulphuric acid and assorted drugs recovered and kept as an exhibit," reads the police report.
