Kenyans planted 750 million trees in 2024 - Ruto

Although the president did not provide a breakdown of the locations and timelines for the tree planting, the figures suggest that Kenyans planted an average of 2,050,000 trees daily throughout the year, including weekends and public holidays.

President William Ruto has said Kenyans planted 750 million trees in 2024, reaffirming the country's commitment to its ambitious goal of growing 15 billion trees by 2032.

While speaking at the State House on Monday, President Ruto urged global leaders to unite in addressing climate change, warning that "climate threats do not recognise borders."

"I urge nations and world leaders to recognise climate action as an imperative for survival and shared responsibility. Inaction and geopolitical divisions only heighten risks we all face," he said.

Although the president did not provide a breakdown of the locations and timelines for the tree planting, the figures suggest that Kenyans planted an average of 2,050,000 trees daily throughout the year, including weekends and public holidays.

The government's aggressive reforestation campaign began in 2023, leading to the designation of November 13 as a national tree-planting day by then-Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki.

In 2023 President Ruto launched an application dubbed JazaMiti to be used by Kenyans or institutions to document their tree-planting activities.

According to the Head of State, the app would be used by the government to monitor the growth of the trees in the journey to reach the 15 billion target by 2032.

Documentation of Tree Planting Activities

JazaMiti provides one an opportunity to learn how to accurately document and monitor your planting activities for effective data tracking and analysis.

By using the app, one can record the location, species, number of trees planted, and planting date.

The app is governed by Kefri Privacy Policy, which can be found at www.kefri.org/components/jazamiti/privacy.html.

"By using the App, you consent to the collection, use, and sharing of your information as described in the Privacy Policy," Kefri said.

Last year, the Cabinet declared May 10, 2025, as National Tree Growing Day, making it a public holiday dedicated to environmental restoration.

To further accelerate the initiative, the Interior Ministry in November directed all 3,950 chiefs to plant at least 250 trees on the first Friday of every month.

This move was part of efforts to meet the ambitious national target.

With COP30 approaching, President Ruto also urged international partners to fulfil their climate financing commitments.

"Kenya will continue leading by example, advocating equitable climate financing and ensuring that Africa's voice remains central in global climate discussions. I urge your support in this endeavour," he told the envoys.
