Meteorological Department forecasts chilly, wet conditions over next five days

The forecast indicates that areas within the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and parts of north-western Kenya will experience rainfall during this period.

Several regions across Kenya are expected to receive rainfall for the next five days, according to the latest advisory issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department.

In the notice released on Friday, July 11, the department projected continued rains from Friday through to Tuesday next week, affecting both highland and lowland regions.

The forecast indicates that areas within the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and parts of north-western Kenya will experience rainfall during this period.

The department noted that in many of these areas, the rainfall will occur in the afternoons and may be accompanied by thunderstorms.

In the eastern highland counties, light showers are expected in Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi and Nairobi. Coastal counties, including Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale, along with coastal parts of Tana River, are also likely to experience a similar weather pattern.

Heavier rainfall has been forecast in counties such as Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, and Uasin Gishu.

Other areas expected to receive intense downpours include Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot.

In contrast, Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado and Taita Taveta are expected to remain largely cloudy with minimal rainfall over the five days.

"Cold and cloudy conditions are likely to occur over some parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the South-eastern Lowlands, and the Rift Valley," Kenya Met announced.

The department also highlighted that temperatures in some areas—particularly Central Kenya, parts of the Rift Valley, and the Lake Victoria Basin—will drop to minimums of about 11°C.

The list of affected counties under the cloudy and cold conditions includes Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka, Nairobi, Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot.
