Storekeeper of notorious Malindi drug cartel arrested, bhang worth Sh12 million recovered

Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations raided a suspected stash house and recovered bhang with an estimated street value of Sh12 million.

Detectives have arrested a key member of a suspected drug trafficking syndicate linked to notorious trafficker Chome Menza, following a dawn raid in Mayungu village, Kilifi County.

Evans Shigalave, identified as the cartel’s storekeeper and logistician, was apprehended in a surprise sting operation on Thursday morning.

Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations raided a suspected stash house and recovered bhang with an estimated street value of Sh12 million.

The police noted the drugs were reportedly packed in gunny bags, ready for distribution.

According to detectives, the syndicate has been operating across Malindi and its environs, and is considered one of the most prominent suppliers of cannabis and heroin in the region.

Areas heavily affected by the cartel’s distribution network include Kwa Chocha, Watamu, Ganze, Gongoni and Msabaha, which are known for rampant drug abuse cases.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that the narcotics are smuggled into Kenya through the porous Isibania border from neighbouring Tanzania, pointing to a wider regional network.

Sources close to the investigation claim that Chome Menza, the suspected ringleader, has long evaded capture and is believed to have influence within some local security agencies.

He is said to openly boast about being untouchable due to his alleged connections.

Police have promised a wider crackdown, saying Shigalave’s arrest is only the beginning.

“This operation was well-planned and executed with precision. We are now closing in on other members of the cartel,” said a senior officer involved in the raid.

The suspect is being held at Malindi Police Station and is expected to be arraigned in court later today as investigations continue.

Authorities have called on the public to volunteer information that could lead to the arrest of other syndicate members.
