Coastal towns face two-day water outage as Mzima pipeline shuts down for upgrade

The two-day interruption is expected to affect water flow to Voi, Maungu, MacKinnon, Taru, Samburu, Mariakani, Rabai, Mazeras and Mombasa West Mainland.

  • Residents in several coastal towns will face a temporary water outage today and tomorrow (July 13-14) due to a planned shutdown of the Mzima pipeline to allow for the installation of a new offtake system.

“Kindly be notified that there will be a scheduled shutdown of the Mzima pipeline water supply on 13 and 14 July 2025 to allow the contractor to install a new water offtake system,” read a notice issued by the Coast Water Works Development Agency (CWWDA).

It mentioned, “This upgrade will enhance water supply to all areas served by the pipeline.”

The two-day interruption is expected to affect water flow to Voi, Maungu, MacKinnon, Taru, Samburu, Mariakani, Rabai, Mazeras and Mombasa West Mainland.

The Mzima pipeline, commissioned in the 1950s, is one of the oldest water supply systems in Kenya and channels water from springs in Tsavo West National Park to coastal towns.

It remains a vital lifeline for thousands of households and businesses in Taita Taveta, Kilifi and Mombasa counties.

Although the pipeline has undergone several minor repairs in recent years, ageing infrastructure and rising demand have continued to put pressure on the system.

Authorities say the installation of the new offtake system is part of long-term efforts to modernise the supply network and reduce frequent breakdowns.

“We sincerely regret any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your patience and understanding,” the CWWDA added.

Residents have been urged to store sufficient water and use it sparingly during the shutdown period. Normal supply is expected to resume after the completion of the installation works.
