Your washing machine is not self-cleaning: Here’s how to keep it fresh and odour free
The warm, damp environment inside the machine becomes a breeding ground for mould and bacteria, which then transfer to your laundry.
If your freshly washed clothes emerge from the machine smelling less than fresh, you're not alone.
Home appliance experts warn that musty odours in washing machines are increasingly common, but easily remedied with the right cleaning routine.

According to recent guidance from several appliance manufacturers, these unpleasant smells typically stem from the buildup of detergent, fabric softener, and trapped moisture in the washer drum, rubber gasket, and detergent drawer.
The warm, damp environment inside the machine creates an ideal breeding ground for mould and bacteria, which can then transfer to your laundry.
To tackle this issue, experts recommend running a hot-water cleaning cycle at least once a month, even if your machine looks clean.
Many modern washers feature a “Self-Clean” or “Tub Clean” setting specifically designed to eliminate hidden residue and bacteria.
For older models, similar results can be achieved by running an empty hot cycle with two cups of white vinegar or a commercial washing machine cleaner.
Adding baking soda to the detergent compartment can also help neutralise lingering odours.
“People assume washing machines clean themselves,” says appliance technician James Mwangi of Nairobi Appliance Care. “But in reality, residue builds up over time. Regular cleaning is just as important as washing the clothes themselves.”
Front-loading washers are especially prone to mould growth around the rubber door gasket.
Cleaning specialists advise wiping the area with a vinegar-water solution, scrubbing away any black spots, and drying it thoroughly afterwards.
The detergent drawer should also be removed and rinsed regularly, as fabric softeners and soap can create a sticky buildup that traps moisture and bacteria, contributing to the musty smell.
Experts emphasise that preventative measures are key to maintaining a fresh-smelling machine:
- Leave the washer door open after each use to promote airflow inside the drum
- Use only the recommended amount of detergent; excess can clog the washer
- Wipe down the gasket and drum every few loads
- If your machine has a drain filter, clean it monthly
“These small steps go a long way,” Mwangi notes. “A clean machine not only smells better but also extends the life of the appliance.”
If odours persist despite regular maintenance, the issue may lie deeper within the machine, possibly in internal hoses or drainage components.
In such cases, technicians recommend scheduling a professional deep-cleaning service.
Routine cleaning not only ensures fresher-smelling laundry but also improves energy efficiency and prolongs the appliance’s lifespan.
