Over 70 trained in aquaculture to boost fish farming profits in Taita Taveta

Each is now expected to train at least 50 farmers in their area, enabling them to adopt better aquaculture practices and earn more from the trade.
More than 70 Trainers of Trainers (ToTs) in Taita Taveta County have completed a hands-on fish farming programme designed to sharpen their skills and increase farmers’ profitability.
The participants, drawn from every sub-county, received intensive instruction in fish production, feeding, treatment, and marketing.

Each is now expected to train at least 50 farmers in their area, enabling them to adopt better aquaculture practices and earn more from the trade.
For the beneficiaries, the training has already sparked optimism. James Mtua Mwatu said the course had changed his outlook.
“I have learnt so much about proper fish care and feeding. This knowledge will help me make more money from fish farming and share it with others,” he said.
Long-time fish farmer Dorcus Gibrans, who has been in the business since 2004, said the training gave her fresh insights.
“Even with my years of experience, I have gained new ideas that can improve my earnings. I am ready to pass this on so others can benefit too,” she said.
County Chief Fisheries Officer Mercy Matuma said the course was tailored to improve farmers’ productivity and equip them for commercial success.
“This is about giving farmers the knowledge to grow their income. With our underused dams and lakes, and with technologies like cage fish farming, there is huge potential,” she said.
The initiative was jointly implemented by the Taita Taveta County Government and the Association of Women in Fisheries and Blue Economy Kenya (AWFBEK).
AWFBEK Chairperson Suzanne Njeri noted the training is part of a larger project covering eight counties, with over 200 farmers in Taita Taveta reached since June.
She said the ToT model would significantly expand the programme’s reach and direct benefits to farmers.
