MP pushes for completion of stalled stadium project in Mombasa

He added that young athletes also need access to proper training equipment if they are to fully benefit from the growing sports industry.

Jomvu MP Badi Twalib has urged both the national and county governments to speed up the completion of the long-delayed renovation of the Mombasa Municipal Stadium.

The legislator said the absence of a standard facility has already denied Mombasa the chance to host major international tournaments, including the African Nations Championship (CHAN), and risks undermining the county’s sporting potential.

“We have seen that talent is emerging from the grassroots. I am telling the national government and the county government that the time has come to improve sports infrastructure such as stadiums,” he said.

He added that young athletes also need access to proper training equipment if they are to fully benefit from the growing sports industry.

“Football is now paying well. What we once saw abroad is today a reality in Kenya, with the President committing millions to sports development. Many people have transformed their lives through football, so we do not want it to be a matter of luck. It should become a viable form of employment,” he noted.

The MP insisted that youth must be given motivation and the right environment to nurture their skills, stressing that football has the potential to provide sustainable livelihoods.

“In Mombasa, we are asking the national government to step in so that our stadiums can be renovated,” he appealed.

The MP further said Mombasa deserves a facility matching the standards of Talanta Stadium in Nairobi, Kasarani, and Nyayo Stadium.

“Mombasa is the country’s second city after Nairobi. After CHAN, AFCON will follow. Without a proper sports facility in Mombasa, we will not be proud,” he said.
