His body was later retrieved and moved to the Kilifi County Referral Hospital mortuary.
Student leaders expressed concern over the rising cases of drowning, urging their colleagues to take personal safety seriously.
Pwani University Students’ President, Anthony Muteti, appealed to learners and members of the public to always consult lifeguards and follow their instructions while at the shorelines.
“We cannot continue losing young lives to preventable incidents. I urge students to be extra vigilant whenever they visit the beach and to cooperate with rescue officers for their own safety,” Muteti said.
Kilifi has become a hotspot for such incidents. Data from the Kenya Red Cross shows that the county has witnessed 21 cases of drowning this year alone, leaving 16 people dead, while several fishermen remain unaccounted for.
In July, five fishermen drowned in Watamu after their vessel overturned, a tragedy that renewed calls for stronger maritime safety measures.
County authorities say steps are being taken to enhance preparedness.
Governor Gideon Mung’aro said the county has acquired seven rescue boats stationed along different points of the coastline, from Mtwapa to Ngomeni in Magarini.
“These boats will greatly assist in handling disasters and maritime emergencies along our coastline. The initiative will go a long way in protecting residents who rely on the ocean for survival,” Mung’aro said.
Beachgoers have been urged to exercise caution when engaging in recreational activities at sea.
