Mvita Somali Business Traders Association launches, board and officials elected

Members described the launch as a significant milestone, providing a formal platform to address collective interests and concerns.

The Mvita Somali Business Traders Association was officially launched on Monday following two weeks of intensive discussions and consultations.

The association's establishment reflects a commitment to fostering unity and collaboration among Somali entrepreneurs and contributing to the economic development of Mombasa County.

At the event at the Majengo Market in Mvita, members described the launch as a significant milestone, providing them with a formal platform to address their collective interests and concerns.

The gathering brought together at least 300 individuals representing key sectors such as health, hotel and restaurant, education, wholesale, and retail. The primary agenda was to tackle prevalent business hurdles and foster collaboration and dialogue among stakeholders.

Ibrahim Ahmed Kusow was elected the chairman, Abdimajid Mohamed the secretary, and Ubah Isaack the treasurer.

The executive board has nine members: Abdiwahab Diriye, Hassan Ahmed, Abdi Isse, Abdirisak Dahir, Issa Mohamed, Abdj Ibrahim, Fowsiya Farah, Sadiya Mohamed, and Jamila Ibrahim.

In his inaugural speech as chair, Ibrahim pledged to champion the interests of the business community.

“In this pivotal moment for our community, we are committed to fostering unity and resilience among Somali business traders. I pledge to uphold, defend, and represent our collective interests with unwavering dedication."

Abdimajid said, "In establishing this association, we aim to create a platform for collaboration and support, addressing the challenges we face as a cohesive entity."

Garad Salah Ahmed, representing Somali elders in Mombasa, endorsed the association, noting that it will play a crucial role in addressing the specific needs and ambitions of the Somali business community in the region.

Garad said the group would foster collaboration, provide resources, and advocate for the interests of Somali entrepreneurs, ultimately contributing to the economic growth and empowerment of the community in Mombasa.

"This initiative is a testament to our community's strength and determination. Together, we will navigate the path towards prosperity and success."
