Kwale is set to host this year's prestigious celebration for naming Africa's leading beach destination.

Scheduled for October 18 at the iconic Kongo Beach, the event is anticipated to draw over 40,000 guests from around the globe.

In 2023, Diani Beach was honoured as Africa's Leading Destination for the 11th consecutive year by the World Travel Awards (WTA). This year, regional tourism stakeholders are hopeful that their beaches will once again clinch the top spot.

Speaking yesterday at the historical Kongo beach after a beach clean-up exercise, Tourism Principal Secretary John Ololtua said preparations are in top gear to ensure hotels and beaches in the area are ready to host the event, which is expected to be graced by international guests.

"We are fortunate this year to host this event that requires meticulous preparation. The event will boost the economy of this region as well as open it to the world," PS Ololtuaa remarked and assured the residents of the government's dedication to enhancing Kwale's tourism potential.

He emphasised the necessity for comprehensive infrastructure readiness, including accessible roads to tourist sites and adequate street lighting across Diani's tourist hubs.

PS Ololtuaa also reiterated the significance of cleanliness in preserving Kwale's status as a top-tier destination within Africa and globally.

"A clean environment is pivotal in attracting visitors," he affirmed, highlighting the upcoming accolades Kwale aims to get during October's festivities.

Notably, Kwale is set to host both Mashujaa Day on October 20 and the prestigious event to acclaim the continent's premier beach destination.

PS Ololtuaa disclosed plans to collaborate closely with the county government on the development of the Map of Africa landmark in Tiwi, Matuga sub-county. The natural formation, resembling Africa's shape when viewed from a bird's eye view, is set against Tiwi Beach's breathtaking backdrop, renowned for its serene environment and geological marvels.

"The Map of Africa holds immense economic promise for Kwale," PS Ololtuaa stated.

He further highlighted ongoing efforts to upgrade infrastructure and amenities surrounding the site.

"These initiatives form a pivotal part of broader strategies to showcase Kwale's natural wonders and cultural heritage on the global stage," he said.

Together with infrastructure enhancements, plans are underway to establish a dedicated market for beach operators along the coast, fostering unified standards and operational guidelines.

This initiative, coupled with proposed streetlight installations and improved road networks, aims to elevate the visitor experience while bolstering local economic activities.

Kwale's Tourism Executive, Michael Mutua, welcomed the collaborative efforts between national and county authorities, noting substantial progress in infrastructure development to protect the region's tourism landscape.

Mutua also expressed optimism regarding the introduction of a beach management bill, designed to ensure sustainable management of Kwale's coastal resources for long-term tourism viability and community prosperity.

"The convergence of Mashujaa Day celebrations and the prestigious beach destination accolade promises not only to elevate Kwale's global profile but also to stimulate economic growth across the region.I urge hoteliers to be at your best,"he said.

The clean-up exercise resulted in the removal of 800 kilogrammes of plastic waste and the planting of approximately 10,000 mangroves.
