The UN World Tourism Week celebrations at Kenya's coastal cities have attracted large crowds, with thousands of locals and international tourists gathering at the iconic Mama Ngina Waterfront Park.

The week-long festivities, which conclude Sunday, have not only brought significant revenue to the region but also showcased Mombasa’s rich cultural heritage and vibrant tourism appeal.

As the event came to a close, business owners in the area reported record-breaking profits. Food vendors, artisans, and traders had the opportunity to showcase their goods, benefiting from the influx of visitors.

One food vendor, Halima Juma, beamed as she spoke about the increase in business. “I have sold more in these few days than I usually do in a month. In a day I could earn between Sh5,000 to Sh7,000. It is great to see both locals and tourists enjoying the delicacies we offer.”

The highlight of the celebrations included thrilling drift displays, cultural performances, and the first-ever TukTuk rally held within Mombasa’s city centre.

Crowds cheered as cultural dancers showcased traditional dances, while local drifters wowed spectators with their daring maneuvers. “I have never seen anything like this before in the city,” said Ahmed Said, a Mombasa resident. “The atmosphere has been electric, and it is wonderful to see so many people enjoying themselves.”

International tourists also flocked to the festivities. Emily Thompson, a visitor from the UK, expressed her amazement at the variety of activities on offer. “Mombasa is such a unique destination. From the food to the performances, it is a sensory overload in the best possible way. I’ll definitely be coming back.”

MV Zoya launch

At the heart of the event was the launch of MV Zoya, a new tour boat designed to offer both locals and tourists a fresh way to experience the coastline and marine life.

The sleek, modern vessel was unveiled at the Tudor Water Sports facility, with Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sherrif Nassir officiating the ceremony.

"MV Zoya is a symbol of our commitment to partnering with the private sector in boosting tourism, creating jobs, and showcasing Mombasa’s natural beauty. I invite everyone to explore the magic of our waters with this new adventure,” said Governor Nassir.

The governor’s speech at the start of the celebrations resonated with many, as he called for renewed investment in the tourism sector. "Mombasa is more than just a destination, it is an experience," Nassir told the crowd. He also urged the national government to adopt an open skies policy to increase direct flights into Mombasa, noting that it could transform the region into a global tourism hub.

Business owners, such as John Yegon, General Manager of Hotel Sapphire, lauded the County Government’s efforts in promoting the city. “Tourism touches every single part of the economy. This week has been a major success for us, and we hope to see more events like this in the future,” Yegon said.

He also echoed calls for better infrastructure. “If the county government could improve the roads leading to our establishments and ensure better security, Mombasa would be unstoppable as a tourism destination.”

As the week’s events culminated at Mama Ngina Waterfront, visitors enjoyed the scenic views, local delicacies, and live performances. The celebrations have not only provided an economic boost but have also fostered a sense of unity among residents, visitors, and business owners.

“Tourism Week has reminded us all how special Mombasa is. It’s been a week of celebration, and I’m proud to be part of a community that welcomes the world with open arms,” said Saida Bwana, a local vendor.

With the introduction of MV Zoya and the success of Tourism Week, Mombasa is positioning itself as a key player in Kenya's tourism industry, ready to attract even more visitors in the years to come.
