Tropical storm IALY: Met warns of strong winds over Kenya, Somalia and Tanzania

The storm is expected to significantly influence weather patterns in various parts of Kenya, bringing enhanced rainfall, large ocean waves, and strong winds.
The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued an advisory over the tropical storm IALY which is expected to impact the East African region posing as a risk to marine operations.
In the marine forecast released on Tuesday spanning from May 21 to May 27, 2024, the weatherman warned the storm is generating substantial wave activity over the Indian Ocean.

Tropical Storm IALY is projected to intensify rainfall across the western half of Kenya and regions within the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, which also includes Nairobi.
The storm is expected to significantly influence weather patterns in various parts of the country, bringing enhanced rainfall, large ocean waves, and strong winds.
Over Kenyan waters, mariners should anticipate south-easterly winds ranging from 10 to 30 knots. These winds will be accompanied by wave heights ranging from 1.5 to 3.6 meters, indicating moderate to strong sea conditions. Small boats and crafts are advised to exercise caution and avoid venturing into deep-sea areas during this period.
Easterly winds at speeds of 30 knots are forecasted over Somali waters. Meanwhile, over Kenya and Tanzania waters, south-easterly winds are expected, ranging from 10 to 30 knots. Wave heights throughout the region are projected to be between 1.5 and 3.6 meters.
Rainfall across the country
The department also released its weather forecast for the upcoming week highlighting a mix of continued rainfall and significant temperature variations across the country.
Rainfall is expected to persist in several regions, notably the Central Highlands, Western Kenya, Northwestern areas, and the Rift Valley. These regions will likely experience consistent showers throughout the week, with the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall.
In contrast, the Coastal and North-Eastern regions of Kenya may see occasional rainfall. While these areas are not anticipated to receive as much precipitation as the highland and western regions, sporadic downpours are likely to occur, potentially affecting daily activities.
Daytime temperatures are forecasted to soar above 30°C in most parts of the Coast, North-Eastern, and North-Western Kenya.
The Central Highlands will experience a notable drop in night-time temperatures, which may fall below 10°C.
