Nairobi County government is unclogging sewer lines in Shah Macaan, Eastleigh, an exercise which started five days ago to rehabilitate the area damaged by flooding.

Last week's heavy rains left Eastleigh's streets as well as the air base army barracks flooded, forcing military officers to intervene.

A specialised team from the environmental department is now working to unblock sewer lines in the area to ease the impact of the flooding.

Nyumba Kumi chairman Naftali Onyando noted that this is the first time the unclogging is taking place, thanks to collaboration between the county government and the Eastleigh Air Base to solve a long-standing problem.

Onyando accused some businesspeople along General Wariungi Street of dumping garbage in the sewers, leading to the blockages.

Peter Mutiso, an environmental officer who is part of the team doing the work, echoed Onyando's sentiments and added that challenges in removing debris from the heavy rains have extended theircleanup operation in the area.

"We expect to be here for the next week," Mutiso said and assured a thorough job to ensure the situation does not recur.

Waste disposal dangers

Meanwhile, some residents have expressed concerns over the disposal of the filth being removed from the sewer line.

Omar Abdi said the team has piled it on one side of the road, exposing them to the risk of diseases such as cholera.

The residents urged the county and the team ont he ground to address the garbage menace promptly, not only by clearing the waste but also by implementing measures to prevent future sewer line blockages.
