Ruto promises to improve infrastructure, water supply for Eastleigh residents

President Ruto also promised to rehabilitate the 2nd Avenue road, a crucial route leading to Eastleigh’s bustling market.

President William Ruto has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving infrastructure, water supply, and electricity reliability in Nairobi’s Eastleigh.

while speaking to the residents on Monday, Ruto said the Northern Collector Tunnel is expected to supply 140 million litres of water to Nairobi.

However, he stressed that proper piping must be put in place to ensure efficient distribution and avoid wastage. Ruto said that he would ask Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja to oversee the laying out of a proper water piping system to ensure all residents benefit.

President Ruto also promised to rehabilitate the 2nd Avenue road, a crucial route leading to Eastleigh’s bustling market, within the next two to three months. He assured traders and motorists that the roadworks would ease congestion and improve accessibility.

Frequent blackouts

On the issue of frequent blackouts, he directed local leaders to work with Kenya Power (KPLC) to address the ongoing electricity interruptions that have disrupted businesses and households.

Ruto emphasised the need for a stable power supply, particularly in business hubs like Eastleigh, which contribute significantly to Nairobi’s economy.

He said there are plans for a 60km sewer line which will help improve drainage and keep roads clean.

He said the project is part of a broader effort to enhance sanitation and prevent flooding, which has been a persistent challenge in Eastleigh.

Youth employment

To support youth employment, President Ruto announced that young people would be contracted to clean roads and collect garbage.

“The youth will be involved in taking care of our roads and ensuring garbage is properly disposed of,” he said.

He said the government is committed to empowering young people through job opportunities.

The event was attended by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, Kamukunji MP Yussuf Hassan, Lang’ata MP Phelix Odiwuor, Kasarani MP Ronald Karauri and Dagoretti MP John Kiarie, among other leaders.

Ruto addressed the public after officially opening the Kamukunji Technical and Vocational College, a key institution aimed at equipping youth with technical skills for employment and entrepreneurship.

He encouraged young people to take advantage of the institution, saying his government is committed to expanding TVET programmes to enhance job creation.
