The Nairobi County government has embarked on a significant initiative to reclaim and repurpose the Pumwani Nyayo Wards, transforming them into a dedicated children's hospital within the Pumwani Maternity Referral Hospital. Geoffrey Mosiria, the County Chief Officer overseeing the health facility, announced plans to revamp the facility, making it the first government-owned children's hospital in Nairobi County and Kenya as a whole.

Speaking during a community engagement event named Pumwani Mashinani, organised by the Pumwani Maternity Referral Hospital in the High Rise area of Majengo, Kamukunji Constituency, Mosiria urged the community to support the repossession of Pumwani Nyayo Wards. This initiative aligns with the broader goal of creating a brighter and healthier future for children in Nairobi County.

Pumwani Mashinani is a community engagement program initiated by the maternal health services hospital to bring its services closer to the local population, encompassing over 300,000 residents. The launch of this program saw the participation of various stakeholders, including politicians, medical professionals, community health promoters, religious leaders, security authorities, and local residents.

The Pumwani Mashinani Health initiative, a key component of the broader community engagement program, aims to educate the public about the available services at Pumwani Hospital. It seeks to encourage individuals to choose medical services in closer proximity, reducing the necessity for extensive travel to access healthcare.

Dorothy Diodo, a nurse in the Department of Infection Prevention and Coordination at Pumwani Hospital, highlighted the initiative's value in showcasing the hospital's services to the community. Recognising the pivotal role healthcare professionals play as liaisons between the hospital and society, she highlighted the importance of reaching out to illustrate the comprehensive healthcare solutions offered.

Christine Kiteshwo, the Chief Executive Officer of Pumwani Hospital, said “The institution's mission to be a hub for quality maternal, neonatal, and child healthcare.” She encouraged the public to regularly visit the facility for improved health, emphasising the initiative's commitment to showcasing the diverse services available.

Vice Chairperson of the Pumwani Board, Ali Joram, expressed delight in reaching out to the community and added that the Pumwani Mashinani event marked the beginning of a transformative journey. The launch, a first-of-its-kind in Nairobi's Eastleigh neighborhood, served as a platform to exhibit Pumwani Hospital's services to the public.

The attendance of prominent figures such as Kamukunji Member of Parliament Yusuf Hassan Abdi, Pumwani Member of County Assembly Paul Ndung’u (alias Petit), and Nairobi Health CEC Goffrey Mosiria underscored the significance of the Pumwani Mashinani outreach drive. This initiative represents a commendable stride towards enhancing healthcare accessibility and services within Nairobi City County.
