Probe on after Tanzanian businessman found dead in his Eastleigh apartment

Some residents said Gerald Mangela's death may have resulted from business rivalry or a deal gone wrong.

The police have opened an investigation into the suspected killing of a Tanzanian businessman who was found dead at his house in Eastleigh, Nairobi, on Sunday night.

The man was identified as Gerald Mangela, a father of two and businessman who operated from the Gikomba market.

Neighbours said he lived alone in the apartment on 12th Street and was often seen being dropped off by a boda-boda rider in the evenings, after returning from work. He sometimes drove the black Toyota Prado parked inside the compound, they said.

Mangela's body was found by suspicious neighbours who noticed no movement into or out of the apartment yet the door was open.

"When they knocked and there was no response, they decided to check inside. That was when they saw him lying motionless and called officers from the Eastleigh North Police Station," a resident said.

"He lived in this house for over 10 years and was good to people. The act [suspected killing] is very shocking," a woman who sells food outside the home told The Eastleigh Voice as she watched the police load the body onto a waiting police van.

The scene was processed by crime scene personnel and the body taken to the Mama Lucy Hospital Kibaki mortuary.

A police officer who did not want to be named said Mangela was likely killed last night and cried out for help but was not heard because of the heavy rain, which resulted in a power outage.

Some residents said the death may have resulted from business rivalry or a deal gone wrong.

Mangela's nephew, Andrew Remale, said he would greatly miss his uncle and asked the police to quicken the probe and ensure the criminals were punished.
