Reprieve for stranded Garissa passengers amid ongoing road repair works

Passengers traveling from Nairobi to Garissa, who were stranded for the past two weeks, received a reprieve after the Arer section of the road was repaired by the Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) three days ago. Mohamed Sheikh Ahmed, a van operator who resumed operations yesterday, mentioned that passengers from Nairobi are alighting at Mororo and then crossing to Garissa town on foot after the floods had subsided.

However, motorists are still unable to enter Garissa town due to ongoing restoration work at Kona Punda in Mororo by KeNHA, which began yesterday. Mohamed explained, "Passengers walk for a distance of almost 300m before boarding taxis, boda boda, and tuk-tuks at the Tana bridge to Garissa town."
In a statement released today, KeNHA notified the public that the Kona Punda section of the road is still impassable due to the ongoing construction work. They advised travelers from Nairobi to plan their journey accordingly, taking into consideration the current condition of the road.
On the Mombasa-Garissa road, KeNHA announced that the section along Madogo-Bura, currently under construction, is likely to resume traffic flow tomorrow. However, the Dukanotu section remains impassable.
KeNHA further informed the public about the Madogashe-Habaswein road connecting Garissa and Wajir counties, stating that it is impassable and still under assessment.
In Marsabit County, the county government has begun the restoration of damaged roads during the respite period from the rains. Dr. Hitler Rikoi, the Chief Officer for Roads in Marsabit County, confirmed the ongoing construction of roads affected by the El Nino rains. "We are currently fixing roads in Adhi Huqa and upper Kiwanja Ndege, and once completed, the focus will shift to roads in Sagate and Jaldesa wards," said Dr. Rikoi. He added that they have identified all roads that need immediate attention to resume the paralyzed transport sector.
