Grade 9 learners to begin selecting senior school pathways Monday

Grade 9 learners will begin selecting their preferred education pathways and subject combinations for Senior School starting Monday, June 9, the Ministry of Education has announced.
In a directive issued to regional and county education directors, the Ministry said the automated selection process will run until June 30 and will apply to learners expected to join Grade 10 in 2026 under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

“All learners in Grade 9 must complete the selection of their pathways and subject combinations within the set window,” Basic Education, Principal Secretary Julius Bitok said.
He further noted that STEM—Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics—will be a compulsory pathway in all senior schools.
The CBC framework requires every public senior school to declare its capacity for Grade 10 admission and submit subject combinations for at least two education pathways, including the mandatory STEM option.
“These combinations will be uploaded into the online system from which learners will make their choices. Each combination must attract a minimum of 15 students,” Bitok said.
Grade 9 learners will be expected to choose one education pathway, select three subject combinations, and indicate a preference of up to 12 schools, which will be drawn from four designated clusters.
Schools offering facilities for Special Needs Education (SNE) have also been integrated into the system to accommodate learners with disabilities.
The Ministry has placed the responsibility of guiding students through this process on junior schools, which are expected to support learners in making informed choices aligned with their abilities and interests.
