KNEC directs schools to identify gifted Grade 9 students for senior school specialisation

According to KNEC Chief Executive Officer David Njengere, the nomination process is intended to identify and place learners in the Arts and Sports Science Pathway in senior schools.
The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has issued directives for the nomination of Grade 9 learners with exceptional talents in arts and sports, ahead of the rollout of senior school pathways under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) set to start in January 2026.
Schools have been urged to submit the details of eligible learners by October 17, 2025, ensuring that nominees demonstrate outstanding potential in specific fields.

According to KNEC Chief Executive Officer David Njengere, the nomination process is intended to identify and place learners in the Arts and Sports Science Pathway in senior schools.
“This process aims to guide learners with exceptional abilities in Visual Arts, Sports, Theatre, Music, and Dance into pathways where they can excel and develop their skills,” Njengere said.
To support schools, the Ministry of Education has provided a Nomination Tool to help teachers facilitate the selection process objectively.
Schools are required to submit learners’ details online using their school code for both username and password.
After logging in, schools can update passwords, review instructions in the user manual, and submit all necessary information before the deadline.
KNEC has emphasised that nominations should reflect learners’ abilities objectively and focus solely on exceptional talent.
Required documents include evidence of performances, productions, exhibitions, records of completion and awards, as well as originality of works and presentations.
The Ministry has structured three senior school pathways based on learners’ potential, achievements, and aspirations.
These include the Social Sciences Pathway, the Arts and Sports Science Pathway, and the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Pathway, providing a framework to guide learners into areas where they are most likely to thrive.
