Government allocates Sh980 million to retrain teachers for 2026 CBC senior school rollout

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba said the government remains committed to ensuring a smooth transition of the current Grade 9 learners to senior school next year and will provide the necessary resources to support this process.

The government will spend Sh980 million to retool senior school teachers in preparation for the rollout of Competency-Based Education (CBE) in January 2026.

According to the Ministry of Education, the funds will support training for teachers expected to handle learners in Grades 10 to 12 under the newly introduced pathways of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), social sciences, and arts and sports.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba said the government remains committed to ensuring a smooth transition of the current Grade 9 learners to senior school next year and will provide the necessary resources to support this process.

“As we were informed in this conference, the government has already set aside Sh980 million for the retooling of senior school teachers on the CBE, a move that should adequately prepare our staff for the transition in January 2026,” Ogamba said.

He applauded principals for pledging to collaborate with the Ministry of Education and stakeholders to ensure that learners move seamlessly into senior school.

“I can count on you for a smooth transition of the current Grade 9 candidates to your institutions next year,” he said.

Insure school property

In a speech read on his behalf by the Head of the Directorate of Secondary Education, William Sugut, the CS praised school heads for their resolutions during the just concluded five-day conference, including a proposal to insure school property and maintain clean, safe learning environments.

“The proposal that school managers insure school property while making sure our children live and learn in a clean and healthy environment is a fantastic resolution. I urge all of you to implement this call every year,” Ogamba said.

“This closing ceremony comes after you have had five days of intense professional and candid engagements on the education we want in our secondary schools.”

The CS said that the principals’ recommendations will play a key role in shaping policy decisions at the ministry. He also assured them of continued government support through timely funding.

“I further commit to working with the National Treasury to ensure that the government disburses the necessary capitation on a timely basis as allocated in the budget,” Ogamba said.

In the 2025/26 Financial Year, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) received the lion’s share of Sh387.2 billion, including Sh7.2 billion earmarked for the recruitment of intern teachers and Sh980 million for capacity building under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi affirmed the government’s commitment to continued investment in education to enhance learning outcomes and promote equal opportunities for all learners.
