Expanding Horizons: Ethiopian Airlines launches new routes to Freetown, Maun

Africa's largest carrier, Ethiopian Airlines, will embark on two new routes, further solidifying its position as a leading force in the global aviation industry.

The airline, known for its commitment to excellence and innovation, continues to push boundaries with the introduction of services to Freetown, Sierra Leone, and Maun, Botswana, expanding its extensive network.

Starting on May 31, Ethiopian Airlines will commence thrice-weekly flights from its bustling Addis Ababa hub to Freetown, marking the first time the airline has served this destination.

The carrier will operate the flights using its smallest and most popular widebody aircraft, the 270-seat Boeing 787-8.

The route will take passengers via Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso, offering a strategic and convenient connection.

On June 10, the airline will lift off for Maun, the tourist capital of Botswana. Maun, renowned for its vibrant tourism industry and status as one of the most populous cities in Botswana, will be served by the 160-seat Boeing 737 MAX 8.

Ethiopian Airlines plans to operate this route triangularly, including a stop in Ndola, Zambia, showcasing the carrier's commitment to optimising its network.

The addition of these routes follows the successful relaunch of Bangui, Central African Republic, in November 2023, after an 11-year hiatus.

Ethiopian Airlines continues to demonstrate resilience and adaptability, responding to the evolving dynamics of the aviation industry.

Booking data analysis reveals that Maun's long-haul demand predominantly comes from Europe, with a focus on key cities like London, Frankfurt, Zurich, Paris, and Amsterdam.

According to the carrier's Chief Commercial Officer Lemma Yadecha, Ethiopian Airlines has discussed plans to reinstate the Amsterdam route, despite currently serving all other European destinations.
