What is kashata?
Kashata is a traditional sweet made from coconut and sugar, often enjoyed during festivals and special occasions such as Eid or Ramadhan, particularly along the coast.
It offers a perfect balance of crunch, chewiness, and sweetness, delivering tropical flavours in every bite.
Ingredients:
• 2 cups grated fresh or desiccated coconut
• 1 cup sugar (white or brown)
• 1/4 cup butter or margarine
• Red food colouring (optional)
• Optional: nuts or spices such as cardamom for extra flavour
Method:
Step 1:
In a sufuria or pan over low heat, melt the butter until completely liquid.
Step 2:
Add the sugar and stir continuously until it dissolves and the mixture becomes syrupy.
Step 3:
Mix in the grated coconut and stir well to combine for 8–10 minutes. If you’d like your kashata coloured, add your preferred food colouring at this stage—red and purple are the most popular choices.
Step 4:
Pour the mixture onto a greased baking sheet or flat surface. Spread it evenly with a spatula or spoon, then leave it to cool completely.
Step 5:
Once firm, cut into small squares or diamond shapes. Enjoy your homemade kashata.
