FKF to appoint new CEO following Patrick Korir’s resignation
Football Kenya Federation (FKF) is set to appoint a new General Secretary following the resignation of Patrick Korir, who has served in an acting capacity since October 2024. Korir’s exit marks a period of transition for FKF, with the federation also grappling with financial constraints and governance challenges. His successor will be tasked with steering FKF through critical reforms and ongoing preparations for CHAN 2025 and AFCON 2027.
Football Kenya Federation (FKF) is set to name a new General Secretary / CEO following the resignation of Patrick Korir, who has been serving in an acting capacity since October 2024. Korir, a seasoned football administrator, tendered his resignation to FKF President Hussein Mohammed on Tuesday.
“FKF will soon appoint a new General Secretary as Korir serves the one-month notice of his resignation,” FKF President Hussein Mohammed said on Wednesday when he received the report of the FKF Transition Ad-Hoc Committee.

As per the FKF Constitution, the new General Secretary will only take office once the FKF National Executive Committee confirms the appointment of the candidate proposed by the FKF President.
Korir took over the role on October 8, 2024, after his predecessor, Barry Otieno, resigned to vie for the FKF Presidency. Otieno had held the position since 2019, following the resignation of Robert Muthomi.
Korir’s tenure coincided with a transition at FKF, as the Nick Mwendwa-led administration vacated office after eight years, making way for Hussein Mohammed’s leadership on December 7, 2024.
During his time as FKF General Secretary, Korir was actively involved in Kenya’s preparations for hosting CHAN 2025 and AFCON 2027. He was named deputy CEO of Kenya’s multi-agency team overseeing preparations for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) and the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). It remains uncertain whether he will continue in this role after his replacement is confirmed.
Korir’s successor will face a demanding task, as Kenyan football struggles with increasing cases of poor officiating, match-fixing, and hooliganism. Additionally, FKF is grappling with a financial crisis, with the federation currently burdened by a debt of close to Sh 400 million.
On Wednesday, FKF President Hussein Mohammed acknowledged the precarious financial state of the federation, stating that FKF plans to consolidate its bank accounts, restructure its debts, and increase funding for women’s and youth football. The incoming General Secretary will be expected to oversee the implementation of these financial reforms.
The FKF General Secretary serves as the federation’s chief administrator, responsible for the day-to-day operations of the football governing body. The position is equivalent to that of a CEO, overseeing the FKF Secretariat.
Key responsibilities include:
- Managing FKF’s correspondence with members, committees, FIFA, and CAF.
- Preparing FKF’s annual budget and financial reports.
- Overseeing staff appointments and dismissals within the FKF Secretariat.
- Organising FKF General Assembly meetings, including setting agendas and recording minutes.
- Convening a Special General Assembly if more than 50% of NEC positions become vacant.
- Participating in FKF National Executive Committee meetings in a consultative role, without voting rights.
The FKF General Secretary can only be dismissed if the National Executive Committee approves a proposal from the FKF President.
With Korir’s exit, FKF now faces the crucial decision of appointing a new General Secretary to steer the federation through this transitional period.
