AFC Leopards out to settle scores against Gor Mahia in Mashemeji Derby

AFC Leopards will be out for revenge when they face arch-rivals Gor Mahia in the Mashemeji Derby this Sunday at Nyayo National Stadium. With just one win in their last nine league meetings, Ingwe are eager to turn the tide against K’Ogalo in the 96th edition of Kenya’s biggest football rivalry.

AFC Leopards will host rivals Gor Mahia on Sunday at Nyayo National Stadium in the 96th league edition of the Mashemeji Derby, aiming to avenge last season’s defeats. The highly anticipated clash kicks off at 4 p.m., with Gor Mahia holding the upper hand in the fixture’s history.

Of the previous 95 league meetings, Gor Mahia have won 33 times, scoring 90 goals, while AFC Leopards have managed 28 wins and 80 goals, with 34 encounters ending in draws.

Last season, Gor Mahia dominated the fixture, winning both home and away en route to defending their league title. AFC Leopards players are determined to reverse that trend.

"The mood at the camp is great. We've prepared well because we know how important this match is. Last season, many of our players were experiencing the derby for the first time, and that might have affected our performance. This time, we are ready and motivated to go for a win," defender Ken Owino told Azam TV.

Echoing Owino’s sentiments, winger Clifton Miheso, a former Gor Mahia player, acknowledged the pressure but remained confident.

"We know the fans expect nothing less than a win, but pressure is nothing new to us. Playing for AFC Leopards comes with expectations, and we must stay composed and focused on delivering on Sunday," Miheso said.

Midfielder Kelly Madada, who stirred controversy earlier this season by suggesting he would not mind playing for Gor Mahia in the future, sees the derby as an opportunity to make an impression.

"This match is a big platform for players to be noticed, and I look forward to giving my best," he stated.

Originally scheduled for November last year, the first-leg derby was postponed multiple times due to the lack of a suitable venue. The reopening of Nyayo National Stadium has now allowed for back-to-back meetings between the two teams, with the return leg set for Sunday, April 6, 2025.

However, CHAN 2024 Local Organising Committee (LOC) chairman Nicholas Musonye has warned both clubs against any acts of violence or vandalism that could put the venue at risk ahead of the tournament.

"We urge AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia to maintain discipline at Nyayo. If there’s any destruction of property or stone-throwing, these teams will not be allowed to play here again," Musonye stated during a press conference at the stadium on Tuesday.

AFC Leopards head into the match seeking to overturn a dismal derby record, having won only once in their last nine league meetings against Gor Mahia – a 2-1 victory in May 2023.

With pride, bragging rights, and crucial league points at stake, Sunday’s clash promises to be a fiery encounter.
