AFCON 2023: End of the road for Cameroon as Nigeria's Super Eagles shine

By |

Nigeria and Angola will now face off in the quarterfinals

In a highly anticipated match in the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON), Nigeria showcased their prowess, securing a crucial victory over Cameroon in a thrilling encounter at the Stade Felix-Houphouet-Boigny.

Right from the onset, Nigeria asserted their dominance, with Semi Ajayi's goal in the second minute seemingly providing them with an early lead. However, their joy was short-lived as the goal was ruled out for offside following a VAR review.

Despite the setback, Nigeria continued to press forward, and their efforts paid off in the 35th minute when Ademola Lookman found the back of the net, giving his side the deserved lead. Lookman's goal came after a brilliant assist from Victor Osimhen, who exhibited exceptional skill and determination in the buildup play.

However, Nigeria faced a moment of concern in the 72nd minute when goalkeeper Mwabali Stanley sustained an injury, prompting a temporary halt in play as he received treatment. In response, Cameroon made a strategic substitution, bringing in experienced striker Aboubakar Vincent to bolster their attack.

Undeterred by the injury setback, Nigeria remained resolute in their pursuit of victory. Alex Iwobi came close to doubling the lead in the 87th minute, but his shot narrowly missed the target. Nevertheless, Nigeria's persistence paid off moments later when Lookman capitalized on a scoring opportunity to extend their lead and seal the victory.

With this impressive performance, Nigeria advances to the quarterfinals of the AFCON, bolstering their aspirations for tournament glory.

Earlier on Angola whitewashed Namibia 3-0 to advance to the quarterfinals.
