Gor Mahia crush Posta Rangers’ unbeaten run as Tusker finally claim first win

Round Five of the SportPesa Premier League delivered defining moments across multiple venues, as unbeaten records tumbled and winless streaks came to an end. From Kisii to Murang’a and Nairobi, fans were treated to a weekend filled with emotion, drama, and top-tier football.

The day’s action began in Kisii, the home of Shabana FC—fondly known as Tore Bobe—where the Glamour Boys endured another disappointing afternoon. They fell 1-0 to Mathare United, suffering a second consecutive home defeat.

Former Shabana striker Dennis Okoth returned to haunt his old club, netting the decisive goal in the 39th minute with a well-taken strike that sealed victory for the Slum Boys.

The opening half offered few clear chances, with both teams struggling to find rhythm. Shabana dominated possession but lacked precision in attack—until Okoth’s moment of brilliance broke the deadlock. His stunning long-range effort left goalkeeper Maxwell Mulili rooted to the spot, marking the highlight of a tense first half that ended 1-0 in Mathare’s favour.

After the break, Shabana started brightly, pushing hard for an equaliser. Elli Asieche received a booking in the 52nd minute for a clumsy challenge on Wycliffe Omondi, and the resulting free kick led to a corner that came to nothing. Mathare, guided by coach Peter Okidi, remained tactically disciplined, tightening their defence and frustrating Shabana’s efforts.

In Murang’a, home side Murang’a Seal’s struggles deepened as they suffered a fourth loss in five matches, going down 1-0 to Tusker FC.

Desperate to end their poor run, Murang’a Seal instead watched Tusker break free from their own winless streak. Erick Kapaito’s decisive goal handed the Brewers their first victory of the season—a much-needed relief after a frustrating start. For Murang’a Seal, however, it marked another bitter setback in a difficult campaign.

The day’s finale came at Nyayo Stadium, where a charged atmosphere surrounded the highly anticipated clash between Gor Mahia and Posta Rangers.

The match carried emotional significance, as Gor Mahia—known affectionately as K’Ogalo—dedicated the game to their late patron, Raila Odinga. The champions responded in style, dismantling previously unbeaten Posta Rangers 3-0 in commanding fashion.

Both sides started evenly, sharing possession and trading half-chances. Gor’s Patrice Essombe came close in the 20th minute but failed to convert. The first half ended goalless, with defences on top and creativity limited.

The second half, however, belonged entirely to Gor Mahia. Just thirteen minutes after the restart, substitute Ben Stanley Omondi—introduced for Samuel Kapen—made an instant impact, scoring with his very first touch after a perfectly delivered cross from Shariff Musa.

With momentum surging, Gor doubled their lead in the 71st minute when Austin Odhiambo calmly slotted home the second. Posta Rangers struggled to respond as K’Ogalo dominated possession and pressed relentlessly.

In stoppage time, super-sub Felix Oluoch sealed the result with a composed finish to make it 3-0.

The final whistle confirmed a statement win for the reigning champions, who stretched their winning streak to three matches while inflicting Posta Rangers’ first defeat of the season.
