Kenya Rugby U20 squad for 2024 U20 Barthes Cup revealed

By |

Kenya Chipu is set to travel for the Barthes Cup set to be held in Harare, Zimbabwe from this weekend

Kenya Rugby U20 Head Coach Simon Jawichre has named the 28-man Chipu squad that will represent the country in this year’s Rugby Africa U20 Barthes Trophy, which will take place in Harare, Zimbabwe, from April 20 to April 28.

Edmond Omondi of MMUST RFC will captain the team, which will feature nine players who were in the squad that competed at the World Rugby U20 Trophy, which was held in Nairobi in July last year.

Those nine players are: Andycole Omolo, Faran Juma, Geylord Ngasi, Iddo Kuta, James Olela, Michael Wamalwa, Nathan Tsindoli, Patrick Wainaina, and Wycliffe Ogutu.

Alvin Khavoli and Philip Okeyo, who stood out for the Menengai Oilers and Nakuru FC in the Kenya Cup, also made the cup.

This year’s tournament will feature hosts and defending champions Zimbabwe, last year’s runners-up Kenya, two-time winners Namibia, and Tunisia.

Since it started in 2017, Kenya has been one of the dominant teams in competition. In the six tournaments held so far, Kenya has been winners twice (2019 and 2021) and runners-up three times (2017, 2018, and 2023). The 2022 competition counts as the only occasion that Kenya did not make the finals.

The teams will battle it out in a round-robin competition over three match days, with the team finishing first, winning the title, and securing Africa’s berth to the World Rugby U20 Trophy 2024, set for July 2–17, 2024, in Scotland.

The squad departs for Zimbabwe on Thursday morning and will start its campaign against Namibia on Saturday, April 20, 2024, before taking on Tunisia on Wednesday, April 24, 2024. Chipu will conclude their campaign with a clash against hosts Zimbabwe on Sunday, April 28, 2024.
