Lawyer Shadrack Wambui speaks, claims he is being targeted over Gen Z protests
Shadrack Wambui, who had presented himself today at Rongai police station, told journalists that he had been summoned without being furnished with proper information from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
A Nairobi lawyer who is at the centre of last week's Gen Z protests has condemned what he terms as a politically motivated summons, insisting he is being targeted for participating in a genuine demonstration.
Shadrack Wambui, who had presented himself today at Rongai police station, told journalists that he had been summoned without being furnished with proper information from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

He claims the move is a calculated attempt to intimidate him for his role in organising a peaceful protest, which has since been hijacked by political forces.
"This was a genuine protest, but some individuals decided to politicise it and went ahead to organise a parallel demonstration involving hired goons," he said.
Accompanied by his legal team, the lawyer noted that he had already secured anticipatory bail and was out on bond. He questioned the legitimacy of the summons, demanding to know the identity of the complainant behind the case.
"We have come here because we are law-abiding citizens. We are not going to take this attempt at intimidation lightly," he said, adding that they will be filing a formal complaint against a Member of Parliament believed to be behind the harassment.
He described the ongoing events as a clear case of political persecution: "This is nothing short of a witch-hunt. We are determined to resist. We cannot allow a system where people who believe in goonism are allowed to operate with impunity."
On Friday, the High Court restrained the DCI from arresting and detaining lawyer Wambui pending the looming prosecution for allegedly planning the June 25 anniversary protests in Ongata Rongai, Kajiado County.
Lady Justice Diana Mochache of the High Court in Kibera granted the lawyer an anticipatory bail of Sh100,000 and ordered him to cooperate with the DCI if there are any ongoing investigations. The cash bail should be deposited in court.
Wambui sought the anticipatory bail and orders barring the DCI and the Director of Public Prosecutions from arresting and locking him up over the weekend.
He had been summoned to appear at the DCI offices in Rongai, but he alleged he was aware of plans to lock him up after the questioning so that he would spend the entire weekend in police cells.
