Mombasa residents flock Mama Ngina Waterfront, other venues to welcome 2025

The New Year celebrations reaffirmed Mombasa’s position as a premier holiday destination.

Mombasa City came alive as thousands of locals and tourists gathered at iconic venues such as the Mama Ngina Waterfront, beachfront hotels, and entertainment hubs to welcome the New Year, 2025.

The city, renowned for its vibrant culture and hospitality, transformed into a spectacle of lights, music, and cheers as residents and visitors ushered in the new dawn.

At the stroke of midnight, the skies above Mama Ngina Waterfront erupted into a kaleidoscope of colours as fireworks lit up the Indian Ocean skyline.

Crowds erupted into cheers, with many capturing the moment on their phones.

“This is my first time in Mombasa, and the energy here is incredible. The fireworks display at Mama Ngina was breathtaking; this is definitely worth the trip,” said Clara Evans, a tourist from the United Kingdom. “

Popular destinations such as Whitesands Sarova Beach Resort and English Point Marina were also packed with revellers enjoying live music, beach parties, and dazzling pyrotechnics.

For many, it was a chance to bond with loved ones and reflect on the past year.

“We came as a family to celebrate. The atmosphere here is unmatched, and it is a beautiful way to welcome the New Year," said Ali Salim, a Mombasa resident.

Similar festivities were mirrored in Nairobi, with landmarks such as the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) and the Global Trade Centre (GTC) hosting spectacular fireworks shows. However, Mombasa stood out for its coastal charm and community spirit.

Jay Pyrotechnics, the entertainment firm behind most of the fireworks displays, played a pivotal role in creating the magic.

“We’re honoured to bring joy to millions through these celebrations,” said Zameer Noorali, the master projection artist at Jay Pyrotechnics.

He noted that the company had executed over 12,000 fireworks shows across East Africa, with Mombasa being one of the highlights of the season.

For others, the celebrations offered a much-needed escape.

“After a tough year, this is exactly what we needed. Mombasa has this unique way of making you feel alive again," said Esther Muthoni, a visitor from Nakuru.

The New Year celebrations reaffirmed Mombasa’s position as a premier holiday destination, with its blend of culture, entertainment, and unmatched scenery leaving both locals and visitors in awe.
