GSU reclaim KVF men’s league title and sweep individual honours

GSU are the 2024/25 Kenya Volleyball Federation Men’s League champions after overpowering KPA in a gripping finals series at Kasarani. The victory not only ended a two-year title drought but also came with a clean sweep of individual honours, underlining the paramilitary side’s dominance this season.

General Service Unit (GSU) are back on top of Kenyan men’s volleyball, reclaiming the Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) National League title in emphatic fashion and underlining their dominance with a near-complete sweep of the individual awards.

After a two-year wait, GSU sealed the 2024/25 championship at the Kasarani Indoor Arena with a commanding performance in the best-of-three finals series against rivals Kenya Ports Authority (KPA). The paramilitary side wasted no time setting the tone, sweeping KPA 3-0 in Friday’s opening match, with their trademark precision and intensity on full display.

KPA, coached by James Ontere, bounced back on Saturday to force a decider. The Dockers edged GSU 3-1 (25-23, 23-25, 25-16, 25-19), showing grit and tactical discipline. But with the title on the line on Sunday, GSU returned sharper, faster, and unrelenting.

In the decisive Game Three, GSU left no room for doubt—sweeping KPA in straight sets to secure the title. Their aggressive serving, solid blocks, and rapid transitions overwhelmed KPA, who could not replicate their Saturday resilience.

The victory not only marks GSU’s return to the summit but also secures their place at next year’s African Clubs Championship alongside KPA. It was a testament to the team’s mental strength, tactical discipline, and the ability to recover after setbacks.

Awards Reflect GSU’s Season-Long Dominance

GSU’s success wasn’t confined to the team trophy. At the conclusion of the finals, they scooped five of the seven individual awards—further underlining the depth and balance that defined their campaign.

Nicholas Matui, whose attacking flair and leadership lifted GSU in crucial moments, was named the league’s Most Valuable Player. Setter Mathias Kemboi took home the Best Setter award for his composure and vision, orchestrating attacks with precision. Outside hitter Naftali Chumba was voted Best Outside Hitter after a consistent season of powerful finishes and high-pressure performances.

Shadrack Misiko’s dominance at the net earned him Best Middle Blocker, while libero Hudson Kipchumba’s reading of the game and defensive stability saw him named Best Libero.

Despite falling short in the final, KPA didn’t leave empty-handed. Chris Owala’s accurate and powerful serving earned him the Best Server award, while Peter Kamara, a key figure in KPA’s journey to the finals, was recognised as Best Opposite Player for his relentless play from the right flank.

A statement season for GSU

GSU’s 2024/25 season was not just about reclaiming a title, it was about reasserting their identity as a powerhouse. Coach Gideon Tarus’s tactical tweaks, the squad’s depth, and a hunger that never wavered made all the difference in a campaign where nothing was guaranteed until the final whistle.

And when the pressure peaked, GSU didn’t just show up—they owned the moment.
