Police arrest Kilifi County driver with Sh100,000 drugs stolen from public hospital
Health CEC Peter Mwarogo said the recovered supplies were intended for Bamba Health Centre in Ganze Constituency but were diverted to a private pharmacy.
Police in Kilifi have arrested a driver working with the county government’s health department and recovered medical supplies valued at Sh100,000 believed to have been stolen.
The arrest came after public reports alleged the illegal sale of drugs meant for public health facilities at a private pharmacy.

According to Kilifi County Executive Committee Member for Health, Peter Mwarogo, the recovered supplies were intended for Bamba Health Centre in Ganze Constituency but were diverted to the private pharmacy.
Speaking at Kilifi North Sub-County Police Headquarters, Mwarogo expressed frustration over the actions of staff undermining the county’s efforts to supply health facilities.
“We have been wondering why, despite supplying drugs and other medical supplies to our health facilities, there are numerous complaints from wananchi that drugs are not available. Now we have learned that some county government workers are stealing the supplies and selling them to private facilities,” he said on Saturday.
Mwarogo revealed that the county administration had terminated the driver’s employment following his arrest.
“The driver is no longer our employee because we have handed him to the security agencies for investigation and prosecution,” he said.
The health official explained that a concerned resident tipped off health authorities about county government drugs being sold privately, prompting immediate action by the police, who recovered the stolen items.
Investigations are underway to identify other potential accomplices within the health department.
“This incident serves as a warning to staff engaging in such malpractices that the law will eventually catch up with them,” Mwarogo warned, urging residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.
He also hinted at plans to introduce an electronic drug distribution system to monitor supply and ensure the intended health facilities receive their allocations.
Kilifi North Sub-County Police Commander Kennedy Maina praised the public for their role in reporting the theft and confirmed that the suspect would be arraigned on Monday.
