Sh100bn Isiolo-Mandera Road to boost connectivity, economic growth in Northeastern - Kindiki

Kindiki visited two segments, Isiolo-Kulamawe and Kulamawe-Modogashe, during the tour and pledged to return soon to inspect progress on the remaining sections.

Northeastern residents will benefit from a Sh100 billion road infrastructure project aimed at transforming the region’s connectivity and boosting economic growth.

The 750-kilometre Isiolo-Mandera road, Kenya’s longest single road project in history, will pass through major centres including Isiolo, Kulamawe, Modogashe, Samatar, Wajir, Tarbaj, Kotulo, Kobo, Elwak, Garre, Rhamu and Mandera.

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has assured residents of Northern Kenya that the road will be completed before the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during an impromptu inspection of the project at Kulamawe in Isiolo County on Tuesday, Kindiki said the government is keen on delivering the landmark project by June 2027.

He emphasised that the plan to open up northeastern Kenya to greater economic activity remains on track, with construction being fast-tracked by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) and other relevant government agencies.

“My work is to ensure we are proceeding well in delivering this promise. I have spoken with the contractor and the community here and have confirmed everything is going on well,” Kindiki said.

The DP revealed that seven contractors have been engaged to work on the road, which has been divided into 11 sections for faster implementation.

The route gained widespread online attention when President William Ruto visited the area in February this year and listed the towns it would pass through.

Kindiki visited two segments, Isiolo-Kulamawe and Kulamawe-Modogashe, during the tour and pledged to return soon to inspect progress on the remaining sections.

“The road will help in beefing up security, dealing with banditry and terrorism, and will catalyse the economic growth of this region, which has been marginalised for a long time,” he noted.

The Deputy President explained that the road aims not only to attract investors but also to improve access to critical government services. It will connect five counties: Meru, Isiolo, Garissa, Wajir and Mandera.

He reaffirmed President Ruto’s earlier pledge to the residents during his February tour of the region, saying the Kenya Kwanza administration remains fully committed to delivering the projects as promised.

Kindiki said government agencies are working in close collaboration to assist contractors and facilitate smooth progress.

“Our security teams and other government officials have been deployed to ensure a good working relationship between the contractors and the locals,” he said.

In addition to the road project, the Deputy President announced that Sh714 million will be used for last-mile electricity connectivity in the region. A separate solar power project worth Sh365 million is also set for construction at Merti, which he said would help link northern Kenya to the national grid and spur regional development.

He further urged all contractors working on the road to collaborate with local communities and ensure that job opportunities are extended to residents of the area.
