Mike Sonko honoured at UK House of Lords with leadership excellence award

The awards recognise Sonko’s contributions to humanitarian work, social initiatives and human capital development, highlighting his leadership in promoting sustainable development and good governance.

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has been honoured at the historic House of Lords in the UK Parliament, where he received the Leadership Excellence Award and an Honorary Doctorate in Leadership and Governance.

Sonko was honoured during the 3rd United Nations International Peace and Governance Council (UNIPGC) Global Leadership Investment Summit and Peace Awards. The event brought together distinguished global leaders and dignitaries committed to peace and good governance.

The awards recognise Sonko’s contributions to humanitarian work, social initiatives and human capital development, highlighting his leadership in promoting sustainable development and good governance.

Organised by the UK Chapter of the United Nations International Peace and Governance Council (UNIPGC), the summit brought together leaders from across the globe to celebrate achievements in peace, governance and social progress.

In addition to the Leadership Excellence Award, Sonko was conferred an Honorary Doctorate in Leadership and Governance by the American University of Peace and Governance, USA.

Expressing his gratitude, Sonko said the recognition reinforced the impact of his work even after leaving public office. He credited his achievements to faith and perseverance, emphasising that his commitment to service remains unwavering.

"See how God is placing me on podiums that elevate and favour me despite being out of the office. I give Him glory, for my work here has been recognised," he said.

"I was conferred with joint honours – the Leadership Excellence Award by UNIPGC and the Jewel Howard Taylor Leadership Programme (Former Vice-President of Liberia), and an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Leadership and Governance by the American University of Peace and Governance, USA, in recognition of my outstanding contributions to sustainable humanitarian efforts, social work and human capital development."

H.E. Amb. Dr Jonathan Ojadah, UNIPGC Global President, urged awardees to serve as ambassadors of peace and exemplary leaders on the world stage. The organisers also announced that the next edition of the summit will take place in Germany around May/June 2026.

The United Nations International Peace and Governance Council (UNIPGC UK) is a diplomatic civil society organisation with global chapters dedicated to promoting peace, advocating good governance and eradicating poverty.
