Northern Kenya mourns Raila, remembers his legacy of inclusion and justice

During his term as Prime Minister, Raila was instrumental in establishing the Ministry of Northern Kenya, a bold step aimed at addressing longstanding neglect in the region.

In a heartfelt tribute, ODM supporters from Northern Kenya, led by Abdiweli Mohamed, the first Regional ODM Coordinator in Garissa County, have extended their deepest condolences and appreciation to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, hailing his enduring legacy in the region.

Speaking on behalf of ODM faithful in Garissa and beyond, Abdiweli praised Raila's historic commitment to marginalised communities, particularly in arid and semi-arid areas of Northern Kenya, where development and national attention were long overdue.

"We will never forget Baba's unwavering advocacy against marginalisation in Northern Kenya," said Abdiweli.

"His leadership wasn't just political—it was personal. He saw us. He heard us," reads a statement by Raila's supporters from the region.

During his term as Prime Minister, Raila was instrumental in establishing the Ministry of Northern Kenya, a bold step aimed at addressing longstanding neglect in the region.

His relentless push for devolution through the 2010 Constitution, which brought crucial resources and services closer to the people, remains one of his most celebrated legacies in the North.

"From Garissa to Mandera, Raila's vision of an inclusive Kenya empowered communities that had long been sidelined. His name is etched in our hearts," Abdiweli added.

Raila's vocal support for the strengthening of Kadhi courts also drew praise from the Muslim-majority region, which saw the move as a sign of deep respect for cultural and religious institutions.

As mourners prepare to lay Raila to rest, the tribute from Garissa reflects the profound sense of loss felt across communities that saw in him a champion, a reformist, and a unifying force.

"Your strength, humility, and endurance in the face of adversity inspired us all. Your legacy lives on in the spirit of a united, progressive Kenya," Abdiweli concluded.

In this moment of national mourning, Northern Kenya stands in solidarity with the Odinga family, honouring a leader whose voice gave strength to the voiceless and whose legacy will shape generations to come.
