Uganda has announced an indefinite suspension of school trips following a tragic accident on Thursday that left 20 pupils dead as they returned home from a school trip.
Uganda’s Acting Education Minister John Chrysostom Muyingo announced on Friday, while addressing journalists in Kampala. He mourned the deaths of the pupils and conveyed the government’s condolences to their families as he announced the nationwide suspension of school trips.
“As an immediate precautionary measure, we must do something about the safety of our children. On behalf of the government, all trips and tours have been suspended all over the country,” he said.
The minister did not indicate how long the suspension would remain in place or provide details on when schools would be allowed to resume organising trips, but reports indicate it will stand as the Ministry reviews existing trip guidelines for schools.
The accident occurred in Kapchorwa District on Thursday night as pupils from King David Junior School, Ndejje, were returning from a study tour.
The bus they were travelling in reportedly developed a mechanical fault at around 8:00 pm, after which the driver is said to have lost control of the vehicle, leading to the crash.
Footage from the scene showed the bus severely damaged, with residents nearby rushing to assist the injured pupils and provide emergency help.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the school bus had taken pupils on an educational tour to Sipi Falls in Kapchorwa District,” Ugandan police said after the incident.
“While returning from the tour, the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, which veered off the road, struck a large stone along the roadside, and overturned. The crash claimed the lives of one adult male and 20 pupils, while three adult males and several juveniles sustained injuries.”
The bodies of the deceased were subsequently taken to Kapchorwa Mortuary pending identification and postmortem examinations.
Traffic authorities in Uganda have identified speeding, poorly maintained vehicles and hazardous road conditions as some of the major contributors to road fatalities in the country.
