"We discussed, among other things, AU reforms and the upcoming election of the AUC Chairperson, a post that Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga is running for."
President Ruto has led AU reform efforts since February, succeeding Rwandan President Paul Kagame, who initiated the reforms in 2016. Despite some progress, many reforms have stalled.
Kagame noted during the February summit in Addis Ababa that only a minority of the goals outlined in his AU governance plan have been accomplished.
Odinga has announced his candidacy for the AUC Chairperson position, with elections scheduled for February 2025.
He has pledged to lobby for Africa to secure two permanent seats on the United Nations Security Council if elected.
AU reforms are considered crucial for enhancing the organization's efficiency and effectiveness. One significant recommendation is financial independence, as the AU currently relies on donor funding for over half of its budget.
Additionally, issues such as visa requirements and implementing the open sky policy remain challenging due to inadequate infrastructure and political tensions.
While the AUC Chairperson maintains neutrality during elections, diplomatic engagements with member state presidents on reforms are acceptable.
However, attending campaign events for any candidate is against protocol, a stance reaffirmed by Faki's spokesperson, Ebba Kalondo.
The upcoming election and ongoing reform efforts are pivotal for the AU's future, aiming to bring considerable political stability and self-reliance to the continental body.
