KMPDC shuts Scion Hospital's maternity wing, opens probe into alleged negligence

It said it has launched a formal inquiry into the matter, with immediate steps taken to protect patient safety.

The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) has shut down Scion Hospital’s maternity wing following a complaint of medical negligence that allegedly led to a stillbirth.

This comes after a woman claimed her daughter died at birth due to negligence by staff at the facility.

“The attention of the KMPDC has been drawn to an incident at Scion Hospital involving its maternity services. The Council has taken note of the matter and initiated a formal inquiry in line with its regulatory mandate,” said the Council in a statement on Saturday.

It said it has launched a formal inquiry into the matter, with immediate steps taken to protect patient safety.

“As investigations are underway, the maternity ward at Scion Hospital has been ordered closed with immediate effect to ensure patient safety and preserve the integrity of the ongoing review,” the statement added.

The Council has assured the public that it will act on the findings of the investigation and ensure accountability.

“The Council remains committed to upholding the highest standards of medical care and will take all necessary actions based on the outcomes of the investigation,” the statement read further.
