KMPDC reminds practitioners and health facilities to renew 2026 licences

Practitioners and health facilities renewing their licences through the KMPDC online portal are advised to ensure they have a valid professional indemnity cover (for practitioners) or institutional liability cover (for health facilities).

The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) has issued a reminder to all medical and dental practitioners, community oral health officers, and health facilities to renew their annual licences for the 2026 practice year before the deadline, warning that failure to comply could disrupt legal practice and patient care.

According to David Kariuki, CEO and Registrar of KMPDC, the renewal process is a legal requirement under Section 15A of the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Act, Cap 253.

The law mandates that every practitioner must hold valid professional insurance, while health institutions are required to insure themselves against the professional liability of their staff.

"Every practitioner shall in each year take a professional indemnity cover and every health institution shall in each year insure the health institution against professional liability of its staff," said Kariuki in the advisory.

"All medical and dental practitioners, community oral health officers, and health institutions are hereby reminded that the deadline for annual licence renewal for the year 2026 is fast approaching."

Practitioners and health facilities renewing their licences through the KMPDC online portal are advised to ensure they have a valid professional indemnity cover (for practitioners) or institutional liability cover (for health facilities).

During the renewal process, users are required to enter the certificate number from the AKI-issued certificate.

This allows the system to verify the authenticity of the certificate automatically. The Association of Kenya Insurers (AKI) certificate is issued together with the regular policy documents from the preferred underwriter.

In addition to insurance, practitioners are required to confirm that they have accrued the necessary Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points for the licensing period. KMPDC emphasised that completing all requirements early will prevent last-minute complications and ensure compliance with regulatory standards.

"All concerned are advised to complete the renewal process without delay to ensure compliance and avoid last-minute inconvenience," stated the KMPDC CEO.
