Kenya confirms the fifth case of mpox

Kenya has confirmed its fifth case of mpox, according to a statement released by the Ministry of Health on Friday.

Health Cabinet Secretary Deborah Barasa reported that the case was identified on Wednesday, September 4, 2024.

“The patient is a 29-year-old female from the YOK area in Mombasa, near Tumaini Academy. She is the spouse of the fourth confirmed case and is receiving treatment in Nakuru. The patient initially visited Coast General Hospital on August 28, 2024, and is now isolated at Utange Hospital’s Mpox Isolation Centre,” said Barasa.

The CS reported that the patient has no recent travel history to countries reporting Mpox cases. However, her spouse had travelled to Rwanda and returned on August 24, 2024.

Active surveillance for suspected cases is ongoing to prevent further spread of the disease. Currently, 33 contacts are under close observation.

Of the five confirmed cases, 2 have fully recovered, while 3 remain in isolation and are responding positively to treatment, demonstrating the effectiveness of our response and management.

The ministry notes that to date, 124 samples have been tested for mpox. Of these, 110 samples tested negative, 9 are still under analysis, and 5 have been confirmed positive. In addition, 687,233 travellers have been screened at 26 ports of entry across the country.

"We want to assure the public that our healthcare facilities are well-equipped to diagnose and treat Mpox. There is no cause for panic if you suspect symptoms. We are taking all necessary measures to control the spread of the disease and ensure the safety of our citizens."

The health ministry has continued to urge the public to be cautious of misinformation and stay vigilant.

"We remain dedicated to protecting the health and well-being of all citizens and will continue to implement comprehensive response measures," Barasa added.

To prevent the spread of Mpox, adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Avoid unnecessary travel to countries with Mpox outbreaks.
  • Avoid direct contact with suspected or confirmed cases and follow preventive measures as advised by healthcare providers.
  • Report any suspected cases to the nearest healthcare facility.
  • Avoid close contact with live or dead animals.
  • Maintain good personal hygiene, including frequent handwashing with soap and water or using alcohol-based hand sanitiser.
  • Report suspected cases to community health promoters or health facilities.
