Kenya’s mpox cases rise to 12 after two more test positive

The government has reported two new cases of mpox, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 12.

Health Cabinet Secretary Deborah Barasa revealed that the cases have been spread across several counties, including Nakuru (2), Kajiado (2), Taita Taveta (1), Busia (1), Nairobi (1), Mombasa (1), Makueni (1), Bungoma (1), Kericho (1), and Kilifi (1).

"Of the confirmed cases, five are currently undergoing management, while seven have fully recovered. We are pleased to report that no deaths have been recorded among the confirmed cases," CS Barasa announced on Friday.

The health boss disclosed that 68 contacts linked to the confirmed cases have been identified, with 60 already completing the mandatory 21-day follow-up period.

"Two contacts have tested positive for mpox, while six others remain under active monitoring," Barasa added.

The Ministry of Health has also ramped up its screening efforts at points of entry, screening 15,269 travellers in the past 24 hours. This brings the cumulative number of travellers screened to 1,161,622.

Testing and vigilance

The National Public Health Laboratory (NPHL) tested 230 samples, of which 12 were confirmed positive for mpox. CS Barasa further noted that 217 samples returned negative results, with one sample still pending.

As a preventive measure, she urged Kenyans to stay vigilant and adhere to the guidelines provided by the Ministry of Health.

"Avoid close contact with infected individuals or their belongings, limit the number of sexual partners to minimise exposure, and practice good hygiene by frequently washing hands or using hand sanitisers," Basara said.

The CS also encouraged citizens to promptly report any suspected mpox symptoms or cases by dialling the toll-free number 719.

Barasa commended county governments for their continued support and cooperation in managing the outbreak, adding that their efforts have been crucial in the national response.

In addition, the Health CS clarified that no cases of Marburg virus disease have been detected in the country.

She outlined symptoms of the disease including high fever, severe headaches, muscle aches, vomiting, diarrhoea, rashes, difficulty swallowing, and bleeding from body openings.

"We have heightened our surveillance activities and urge the public to remain alert," Barasa noted.
