KMPDU notifies Police of peaceful demo on Monday to push for better working conditions

KMPDU has threatened a nationwide strike starting December 22, 2024, if their demands remain unmet.
The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists' Union (KMPDU) has officially notified the police of a planned peaceful protest next week to demand the implementation of longstanding agreements with the government.
The demonstration, scheduled for Monday, December 16, 2024, is expected to start at 8 am.

In a letter addressed to Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and copied to key Nairobi police officials, KMPDU Secretary-General Davji Atellah outlined the union’s plans and requested police protection for the event.
“This is to notify you that we shall be having a peaceful demonstration on Monday, 16th December 2024, starting from 8 am,” stated Dr Atellah.
“We therefore request you to offer us security on this important mission. We shall abide by all the regulations and guidelines given by your office.”
The planned march will begin at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), proceed to Nairobi Hospital, and culminate in a demonstration at the Ministry of Health and Parliament buildings.
The union is advocating for the implementation of the 2017 and 2021 Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs) and the May 2024 Return-To-Work Formula (RTWF), signed by various stakeholders such as the Ministry of Health, the national government, and county governments.
"The picketing aims to compel the government to implement the Collective Bargaining Agreements dated 30th June 2017 and 6th July 2021, as well as the return-to-work-formula documents dated 8th May 2024," Atellah explained.
The doctors’ grievances include poor working conditions, delayed salary payments, and pay cuts, particularly for medical interns.

“We are advocating not just for ourselves but for the health and welfare of Kenyans. The implementation of these agreements is critical for delivering quality healthcare services,” said Dr Atellah.
