485 arrested following June 25 protests, says DCI boss Amin

Accoring to DCI Mohamed Amin, of those arrested, 448 have already been charged with serious offenses ranging from murder, terrorism and rape to arson, robbery, and possession of illegal firearms, while 37 suspects remain under active investigation.

Authorities have arrested 485 individuals in connection with the violence that erupted during the Gen-Z anniversary protests on June 25, Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss Mohammed Amin has confirmed.

According to Amin, of those arrested, 448 have already been charged with serious offenses ranging from murder, terrorism and rape to arson, robbery, and possession of illegal firearms, while 37 suspects remain under active investigation.

In a statement on Monday, Amin revealed that the protests, initially peaceful, were infiltrated by well-organised criminal networks with a deliberate agenda to incite chaos and destruction across the country.

"Intelligence and arrest records reveal that some individuals with specific instructions to attack public institutions and security installations were ferried in unmarked vehicles from particular areas that security agencies are currently looking into," he said.

According to Mohammed, the unrest led to widespread destruction, including the burning and vandalism of Kikuyu Law Courts, Kikuyu County Government Offices, and several police stations such as Olkalau, Dagoretti, Gachui, and Kamukunji.

Several firearms and police equipment were stolen, according to Mohammed, some of which have already allegedly been used in violent crimes within Naivasha.

"A grenade launcher, four guns and other police equipment, including uniforms and anti-riot gear stolen have so far been recovered and the perpetrators apprehended," said Amin.

Amin added that businesses and public institutions were also heavily looted and vandalised in Nairobi CBD, Kitengela, Dagoretti, Naivasha, Kikuyu and Nyeri during last week's demonstrations.

"Dagoreti, Naivasha, Kikuyu, Nyeri, among others, were brazenly looted and vandalised. Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) were violently broken into, and millions of shillings were stolen in the chaos," said Amin.

"In addition, we received credible reports of assault and sexual violence committed by criminals who had earlier infiltrated the demonstrations, further compounding the gravity of the situation."

According to Mohammed, the violence continued beyond June 25. The Ndunyu Njeru police station in North Kinangop was reportedly attacked on June 26, with Amin claiming that around 400 armed individuals stormed the facility, demanding the release of prisoners.

"Despite the officers' resistance, the crowd overwhelmed them, resulting in the burning of the police station and the tragic suffocation and deaths of three suspects, whereas one is currently hospitalised in a very critical condition," said Amin.

"This incident, while not directly linked to the events of June 25, reflects the ongoing momentum of violence against police stations in the country, a trend that continues to threaten law and order and jeopardise our nation's peace and security."

Mohammed also expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and injuries sustained, including eleven police officers seriously hurt while protecting peaceful protestors and property.

He similarly reaffirmed the police's commitment to safeguarding lawful demonstrations and bringing all perpetrators of violence to justice.

"Despite the officers' resistance, the crowd overwhelmed them, resulting in the burning of the police station and the tragic suffocation and deaths of three suspects, whereas one is currently hospitalised in a very critical condition," said Amin.
