KeNHA announces two-week closure of section of Mombasa-Nairobi Highway

KeNHA said the closure will take effect from Saturday, August 23, 2025, and remain in place until Sunday, September 7, 2025.
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced a temporary closure of the Mombasa–Nairobi Highway (A8) between Makupa Bridge and Changamwe Interchange for two weeks to allow for major construction and drainage works.
In a notice, KeNHA said the closure will take effect from Saturday, August 23, 2025, and remain in place until Sunday, September 7, 2025.

“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) wishes to notify the public that a section of Mombasa–Nairobi (A8) Highway will experience traffic disruption between the Makupa Bridge and Changamwe Interchange from Saturday, August 23, 2025, to Sunday, September 7, 2025,” read the notice.
KeNHA explained that the works are necessary to enhance road safety and connectivity along the busy stretch linking Makupa Bridge and Changamwe.
“This is to allow for road construction and drainage works to ensure seamless road connectivity between Makupa Bridge and the Changamwe area,” the Authority said.
Motorists have now been urged to adhere to the proposed traffic management plan and to cooperate with police officers and traffic marshals who will be deployed to manage flow along alternative routes.
“KeNHA advises motorists to follow the proposed traffic management plan below and cooperate with the police and traffic marshals on site,” the Authority said.
The announcement comes barely a month after the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) issued a similar advisory on a long-term closure in Nyali.
On July 31, 2025, KURA confirmed that a section of Links Road would be closed for six months, starting Friday, August 1, 2025, and ending Friday, January 30, 2026.
According to KURA, the extended closure is necessary to undertake major works aimed at addressing persistent flooding and drainage problems that have for years disrupted traffic and caused damage along the route.
In its statement, KURA urged motorists to take extra caution around the affected area and adhere to traffic directions provided during the construction period.
With both KeNHA and KURA carrying out simultaneous roadworks in Mombasa, motorists are expected to face heightened traffic congestion in the coming months. Authorities have urged patience, stressing that the projects are necessary to secure long-term improvements in road infrastructure and safety.
