UN warns of ‘horror show’ as over 60,000 killed in Gaza as Israel-Hamas war intensifies

In a statement on Tuesday, the Hamas-run Ministry of Health in Gaza reported that 60,034 people had been killed and 145,870 injured since the conflict began, with thousands more feared trapped under collapsed buildings.

More than 60,000 Palestinians have been killed since Israel launched its military offensive in Gaza in October 2023, according to figures released by the Hamas-run Ministry of Health in Gaza.

In a statement on Tuesday, the ministry reported that 60,034 people had died since the conflict began. It also said 145,870 others had been injured, with thousands more believed to be trapped beneath the rubble of collapsed buildings.

The conflict erupted on October 7, 2023, when Hamas fighters crossed into southern Israel, killing approximately 1,200 people and taking more than 250 hostages, according to Israeli authorities.

In retaliation, Israel launched a sweeping air and ground campaign across Gaza, targeting what it describes as Hamas military positions and underground tunnel networks.

The Israeli military has said the operation is intended to dismantle Hamas’ infrastructure and secure the release of hostages still held in Gaza.

International condemnation

However, the high civilian casualty toll and extensive devastation have triggered growing international condemnation, including from the United Nations, and renewed demands for a ceasefire.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has decried the scale of the destruction, calling it a “horror show.”

“We need look no further than the horror show in Gaza; with a level of death and destruction without parallel in recent times,” he told the UN Security Council.

Gaza is also experiencing a worsening humanitarian crisis. Israel has severely restricted aid deliveries, citing fears that Hamas will divert the supplies.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that nearly 90 per cent of Gaza’s population has been displaced, with many residents forced to relocate multiple times.

Following recent Israeli evacuation orders in Deir al-Balah, the UN announced that 87.8 per cent of Gaza is now either under evacuation orders or classified as a restricted military zone.

Amid the devastation, global pressure to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is intensifying.

Countries such as France—which last week pledged to recognise Palestinian statehood—are backing a two-state solution, envisioning Israel and Palestine coexisting as independent nations.
