Israeli airstrikes kill 40 in Gaza, including 10 seeking aid, as starvation deaths rise

Meanwhile, Gaza’s health ministry reported five additional deaths from starvation on Monday, raising the hunger-related death toll to 180, including 93 children.

Approximately 40 Palestinians were killed in Israeli airstrikes across Gaza on Monday, including 10 who were reportedly trying to access humanitarian aid, according to local health authorities.

An additional five people died from starvation, as aid agencies continue to warn of an impending famine in the region.

According to Reuters, the 10 individuals were shot in two separate incidents near aid distribution points run by the U.S.-supported Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) in central and southern Gaza.

On Sunday, 13 more people were killed while waiting for UN aid trucks at the Zikim crossing near Gaza’s northern border.

The United Nations estimates that over 1,000 Palestinians have died while attempting to collect aid since GHF operations began in May 2025, most reportedly shot by Israeli forces stationed near distribution sites.

"Everyone who goes there comes back either with a bag of flour or carried back (on a wooden stretcher) as a martyr, or injured. No one comes back safe," a resident said.

"We don't want war, we want peace, we want this misery to end. We are out on the streets, we all are hungry, we are all in bad shape, women are out there on the streets, we have nothing available for us to live a normal life like all human beings, there's no life."

Israel has blamed Hamas for the deepening humanitarian crisis and says it is facilitating aid through limited daily ceasefires, airdrops, and designated aid corridors.

Meanwhile, Gaza’s health ministry reported five additional deaths from starvation on Monday, raising the hunger-related death toll to 180, including 93 children. UN agencies insist that airdrops are insufficient and continue to call on Israel to allow far more aid to enter Gaza by land.

Aid officials say at least 600 trucks are needed each day to meet Gaza’s basic humanitarian needs, matching pre-war levels of assistance.

The war began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas attacked Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages. In response, Israeli military action has since killed more than 60,000 Palestinians. Of the original hostages, 50 are still believed to be held in Gaza, with 20 presumed to be alive.
