Moi University sacks over 900 staff due to financial strain

The affected staff members, including unionised workers and lecturers, have received letters notifying them of their redundancy.

Moi University has dismissed over 900 employees as part of a redundancy exercise aimed at addressing its ongoing financial challenges.

The affected staff members, including unionised workers and lecturers, have received letters notifying them of their redundancy, with the terminations set to take effect within 30 days of the notices.

The redundancy letters, some of which have been seen by the Star, are signed by the acting Deputy Vice Chancellor, Loyce Maru.

"Following review of the university’s operational needs and financial sustainability, your position has been identified as one of those affected by the redundancy process," reads part of the letter sent to the employees.

The university's decision impacts 372 members of the Kenya Union of Domestic, Hotel, Educational Institutions, Hospitals and Allied Workers (KUDHEIHA), 380 members of the Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSU), and 120 lecturers who belong to the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU).

UASU has strongly opposed the move, calling it illegal and unprocedural.

"The redundancies are illegal because the university has not followed laid down procedures in the law," said Nyabuta Ojuki, Deputy Secretary for the UASU Moi University Chapter.

In response, both KUDHEIHA and KUSU have also indicated they will take legal action against the university.

However, the university maintains that the redundancy process is in accordance with Section 40 of the Employment Act of 2007 and relevant Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs).

The university assured that all terminal benefits will be paid to the affected employees, though no specific date has been provided for the disbursement.

The redundancy letters also instruct the workers to return any university property in their possession by their last working day.

Moi University is grappling with a significant financial crisis, with debts exceeding Sh10 billion, which has prompted the need for drastic measures to ensure its survival.
