Majengo clashes: Autopsy confirms Dennis Muthui died from gunshot, not stabbing
Muthui’s family is now demanding the immediate arrest and prosecution of the officer responsible for his death.
A post-mortem on the body of Dennis Muthui, who was killed during protests in Nairobi’s Majengo, has confirmed that he died from a gunshot wound.
On Friday Chief Government Pathologist, Dr Johansen Oduor, stated that the 26-year-old man was shot at close range in the stomach with a small-calibre weapon, likely a pistol. This contradicts an earlier report by the police, which claimed Muthui had been stabbed.

Oduor revealed that he recovered gun pellets and plastic fragments from Muthui’s abdomen during the post-mortem.
These were collected by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) as part of their ongoing investigation.
Muthui was shot on Wednesday during violent protests triggered by the killing of 17-year-old Ibrahim Ramadhan by police.
Amid the clashes, an unidentified police officer reportedly fired at Muthui. Shortly after, the National Police Service (NPS) issued a statement claiming he had been stabbed by criminals.
Justice for Dennis
Muthui’s family is now demanding the immediate arrest and prosecution of the officer responsible for his death.
“We want justice for Dennis. The officer who shot him must be held accountable,” a family member said.
IPOA has launched an investigation into the shooting, which involved officers from Shauri Moyo Police Station. Two people were killed and three others seriously injured during the chaos in Majengo.
In a statement, IPOA Chairperson Ahmed Hassan said the investigation aligns with the authority’s mandate to probe alleged misconduct by police officers.
He confirmed that IPOA’s rapid response and forensic investigations team, along with specialists in monitoring police conduct during public order operations, responded to the incident.
“The team has been tasked with gathering all relevant information to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting and assessing how the police handled the demonstrators,” Ahmed stated.
He added that IPOA has already recorded key witness statements and attended one post-mortem as part of the probe.
