NCIC fires vice chair Wambui Nyutu over partisan politics, replaces her with Dorcas Kedogo

NCIC Chairperson Samuel Kobia said Nyutu’s conduct had become “untenable” and incompatible with her constitutional and statutory responsibilities.

The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has fired Vice Chairperson Wambui Nyutu for persistently engaging in partisan political activities, which the commission says breach her oath of office and the law.

NCIC Chairperson Samuel Kobia said Nyutu’s conduct had become “untenable” and incompatible with her constitutional and statutory responsibilities.

“The commission unanimously resolved to relieve Ms Nyutu of her role as Vice Chairperson of the Commission with immediate effect,” Kobia said in a statement on Tuesday after a Special Commission Meeting.

Nyutu came under scrutiny at the start of the year after the Commission flagged what it described as a consistent pattern of political engagement. The NCIC said it held three Special Meetings — on January 3, January 23, and February 6 — to address her conduct, which included public remarks and appearances seen as politically partisan.

Although Nyutu initially denied the allegations, the Commission noted that she later apologised and formally committed to steering clear of political activity — a promise she now stands accused of violating.

Partisan political activities

“At its meeting on 22nd July, 2025, the Commission noted with deep concern that Ms Wambui Nyutu has since been involved in partisan political activities, including participation in meetings affiliated with a particular political party,” Kobia said.

“These actions constitute continued engagement in partisan politics, in contravention of her commitment to the Commission and in breach of the expectations of impartiality required of all commissioners.”

The NCIC said it had now triggered the formal process to remove her entirely as a commissioner, invoking Section 23 of the National Cohesion and Integration Act (CAP 7N) alongside “other relevant constitutional mechanisms.”

“The Commission will formally notify the relevant appointing authority in this regard,” Kobia said.

The commission also announced that Dorcas Kedogo had been unanimously elected as the new Vice Chairperson, effective immediately.

Additionally, the NCIC disassociated itself from any political statements previously made by Nyutu, clarifying that her remarks were personal views and did not reflect the Commission’s official position.

“The NCIC reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the principles of impartiality, integrity, and professionalism in the execution of its mandate. Commissioners are bound by the oath of office to remain independent and non-partisan,” Kobia said.
